The North Karelia College of Further Education Lieksa (AmoL) and the Adult Education Centre of North Karelia (AikoL) are part of the North Karelia Educational Federation of Municipalities (PKKY), one of whose member municipalities is the town of Lieksa. The purpose of AmoL and AikoL is to develop vocational knowledge on individual and working life basis. Pertaining to their basic function, the institutes provide education leading to basic vocational degrees, labour market training, additional training, apprenticeship training and personnel training, and develop the business activities within their operating environment.

 

The College of Further Education Lieksa is a diversified vocational education institute, whose fields of training are Business and Administration sector, Technology and Vehicle sector, Social and Health sector and Tourism, Catering and Home Economics sector. In addition, the operation of the institute includes apprenticeship training, different forms of adult education, additional vocational training, labour market training, project functions and a business training programme for North Karelia University of Applied Sciences carried out according to an outsourcing service contract.

 

The College of Further Education produces printing products, summer hostel services, marketing research and catering services, which are also produced as work performance in the Tourism, Catering and Home Economics sector. Also services that relate to the students training in the vehicle, electric and construction sectors are produced as work performance.

 

Pertaining to its basic function, AmoL produces and maintains learning environments constructed together with the working and business life. On the basis of the needs of the customers, the institute also produces and develops vocational education and development services that serve the needs of the area. The needs of the customers and the regional commune, relevance to working life and the needs of the investors and owners are taken into account in the production of services.

 

Adult Education Centre Lieksa maintains and increases the vocational skills of the adult population, contributes to employment and entrepreneurship, develops working life and supports lifelong learning. Adult education centres provide advanced and further training, labour market training and apprenticeship education as well as functions to serve and develop working life. Adult Education Centre Lieksa arranges vocational, degree-oriented and further training for adults as well as niche training for the needs of business life.

 

Adult Education Centre Lieksa produces services e.g. for different branches of technology as contract and subcontract work.

All education at Adult Education Centre Lieksa can be carried out in accordance with the customers needs.

 

In addition to the University of Applied Sciences, other interest groups for the institutions are the business life and public institutions of the area. Implementing the periods of learning at work for the students and the demonstrations pertaining to adult education requires continuous interaction between the teachers, representatives of the working life and different educational institutions of the province. This is a central focus area of operation also in the future, as demonstrations of vocational skills by young persons are included in the curricula of basic vocational degrees.

North Karelia University of Applied Sciences operates as an independent utility, owned by the city of Joensuu. The units of the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences are located in Joensuu, Kitee, Lieksa, Nurmes and Outokumpu. The University of Applied Sciences provides youth and adult education leading to an academic degree. The functions of the University of Applied Sciences are education, regional development and research and development.

 

In Lieksa, the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences has a degree programme in Business and Administration. The programmes goal in Lieksa in 2006 - 2009 is increasingly to take into account the functions of educational and regional development as well as research and development functions assigned to polytechnics. In Lieksa, approximately 150 students have graduated as Bachelors of Business Administration.
